ABOUT

Parkinson Ready Program - Barcelona

In 2023, leading up to the 6th World Parkinson Congress, the WPC teamed up with the Associació Catalana per al Parkinson (Catalan Parkinson’s Association) and the Barcelona Turisme Convention Bureau to launch the Parkinson Ready Barcelona program.  More than 160,000 people live in Spain with Parkinson’s, many of whom reside in Barcelona. The city is not only home to many people living with Parkinson’s disease (PD), but also a world-class city that attracts tourists from around the globe via plane, train, cruise ship, and car, and some of those visitors have Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder, affecting more than 11.8 million people globally and is expected to double by 2040. While Parkinson’s is characterized by tremor, muscle rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with balance, the symptoms are much broader than this with many hidden symptoms that impact quality of life, including depression, fatigue, pain, sleep challenges, and anxiety
To help demystify Parkinson’s, help remove the stigma that is often associated with the disease, and to minimize the stress of traveling while living with PD, the World Parkinson Coalition teamed up with the Associació Catalana per al Parkinson and the Barcelona Turisme Convention Bureau, with support from AbbVie, to offer its “Parkinson Ready” program to the city of Barcelona in the months leading up to the 6th World Parkinson Congress.
