WPC teams up with The Parkinson Council to launch Parkinson Ready program in Philadelphia. Why Philly? More than one million people with Parkinson’s live in the USA, more than 35,000 of them residing in Pennsylvania, many of whom live in and around Philadelphia. Those in the state who don’t live near Philadelphia, but who have PD, are likely to receive their care in the city from one of the leading Parkinson’s centers. Philadelphia is not only home to many people living with Parkinson’s disease (PD), but also a world-class city that attracts tourists from around the globe via plane, train, and car, and some of those visitors have Parkinson’s.
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder, affecting more than 11.8 million people globally (1) and is expected to double by 2040. While Parkinson’s is characterized by tremor, muscle rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with balance, the symptoms are much broader than this with many hidden symptoms that impact quality of life, including depression, fatigue, pain, sleep challenges, and anxiety To help demystify Parkinson’s and minimize the stress of traveling while living with PD, the World Parkinson Coalition has teamed up with The Parkinson’s Council to offer its “Parkinson Ready” program to the city of Philadelphia. This is one of the first times the program is being offered to a city that is not hosting the World Parkinson Congress. We have decided that it’s too important of a training to offer it only to cities that host the triannual WPC and so we have taken the program on the road in 2024 to ensure other cities are trained to work with our community.
