What We Do

Bringing the Community Together
The World Parkinson Coalition® is a unique organization filling a niche in the global Parkinson's community by bringing the full spectrum of community members together both in person at our triennial World Parkinson Congresses and  virtually at our WPC Scientific Updates.

Read about how the World Parkinson Coalition® got started and the mission that keeps the organization going in the The Huffington Post:
The World Parkinson Coalition is hoping to close the door on Parkinson's disease by Elizabeth "Eli" Pollard, WPC Executive Director

World Parkinson Congresses
After being launched in 2004, the WPC went on to organize the first ever World Parkinson Congress in 2006. In order to do this, many, many friends, partners, and supporters in the community came together to help create the first ever, international, high level scientific meeting that opened its doors to everyone in the Parkinson's community - including people with Parkinson's and their caregivers or care partners.  That took place in 2006 and since then, three more World Parkinson Congresses have taken place.

Learn more about the past Congresses (WPC 2006 in Washington, DC, USA; WPC 2010 in Glasgow, Scotland; WPC 2013 in Montreal, Canada; and WPC 2016 in Portland, Oregon), and the upcoming WPC 2019 in Kyoto, Japan.  The Congresses are successful because they include the whole community and because of the amazing list of Organizational Partners who make the Coalition a rich and diverse group of advocates and champions in the global community.

A few delegates from the recent Portland-based WPC 2016, summed up their thoughts for us below:

“Wonderful assortment of sessions and so organized with great attention to detail (such as cell phone charge stations, afternoon snacks....).”

-Person with Parkinson's

“That was my first experience at a conference of that level. I was extremely pleased. Only wish I could have gone to every session.”

-Non-Profit Worker

“It was my first experience in the Parkinson's world and it was a very positive experience for me.  Moving me to tears, to laughter, and aha moments.  Being among Parkys and scientists was PERFECT.  Please keep that aspect.  I think it is part of what makes WPC shine.”

-Post-Doctoral Student

“I've gone to many professional conferences.  This one was by far the most well planned in just about every way.  I will never part with my copy of the 131-page  Final Program (or the disclosure list).  It is a testament to all of the planning that went into this Congress.”

-Care Partner

“This was a very well organized congress with lots of variety.  The committee who put this together are to be commended.  I think it was one of the best conferences I've been to.”

-Speech Language Pathologist

“I really enjoyed this conference and was happy to have been informed about it and glad that I attended.  I would have liked to have spent more time at the entire event and hopefully, in 2019, I will be able to do that”

-Clinical Researcher

While the main focus of each Congress is education, the breath of what is offered goes far beyond the educational aspect of traditional scientific Congresses.  The networking opportunities are endless and the WPC even helps create some of the friendships with the WPC Buddies Program where delegates are matched with buddies, many of whom are attending a WPC for the first time. The Congress also offers learning opportunities in the Wellness Way, where delegates can visit the Renewal Room for yoga, tai chi, dancing and more or stop in the Massage Room or Meditation Room to give these therapeutic options a try.

WPC Scientific Updates
New to the Coalition, and designed at the request of delegates, we are now bringing virtual cross-pollinated learning opportunity to the community via our WPC Scientific Update, which will take place exactly one year and two years after the close of each World Parkinson Congress in the "down" years between each in-person World Parkinson Congress. Most recently the WPC Scientific Update was held from Tuesday, September 30 - Thursday, October 2 2015 with thousands of participants joining us online for virtual updates on the science of Parkinson's.

They are free online updates that are short, to the point, concise, and memorable. Most importantly, they are designed to give the viewers hope for what's to come and hope for a better future within the scientific world of Parkinson's.

Patients Included Movement
The World Parkinson Coalition® is proud to display the "Patients Included" logo indicating that our organization keeps people with Parkinson's front and center in everything we do, from running our organization to designing our triennial World Parkinson Congresses.

The World Parkinson Congress fulfills the Patients Included charter clauses in the following ways:

Patients or caregivers with experience relevant to the conference's central theme actively participate in the design and planning of the event, including the selection of themes, topics and speakers.

People with Parkinson's (PwPs) and care partners sit on our Board of Directors, all of the planning committees for each World Parkinson Congress and our online WPC Scientific Updates. PwPs also advise us on a long list of items that help make each program the WPC offers as meaningful and valuable as possible.

Patients or caregivers with experience of the issues addressed by the event participate in its delivery, and appear in its physical audience.

PwPs and care partners are members of the faculty for each World Parkinson Congress.

Travel and accommodation expenses for patients or carers participating in the advertised program are paid in full in advance. Scholarships are provided by the conference organizers to allow patients or carers affected by the relevant issues to attend as delegates.

The travel stipend and accommodation expenses for given to all WPC speakers. For each World Parkinson Congress, the WPC offers travel grant scholarships to people with Parkinson's and care partners to attend. Click here to learn more about the WPC Travel Grant Program.

The disability requirements of participants are accommodated. All applicable sessions, breakouts, ancillary meetings, and other program elements are open to patient delegates.

The World Parkinson Coalition® makes sure that the venue of every World Parkinson Congress is accessible.

Access for virtual participants is facilitated, with free streaming video provided online wherever possible.

The WPC offers a number of free online webcasts including the WPC Scientific Update, an online update of the latest scientific updates since the last WPC and more than 15 hours of educational sessions as well as the Opening Ceremony from the WPC 2016.
